_THE SHAPE OF CONVENIENCE CHANNELS
The SRCG “Shape of Convenience Forum” was held at the Hempel Hotel, London, W2 in April.
It was an event designed to discuss the future of the convenience market with industry
leaders and was attended by high profile figures such as Bill Grimsey (CEO, Big Food Group),
Eoin McGettigan (Executive Chairman, Musgrave) and David Saunders (MD, TM Retail).
To form a foundation for these discussions, SPA carried out an independent piece of
research into the changing shape of convenience and presented the findings to the
audience.
As part of the study, we looked at old and new convenience formats. We found that
on average, new format shoppers spend 20% more and 2 minutes extra on their shopping
when visiting a convenience store.
We also discovered that the issue of price increases in importance in direct proportion
to the rate at which the retailer fails to deliver.
And that too often, convenience outlets are just selling ‘stuff’ (i.e. products) rather
than needs-based solutions.
Our research is not for publication nor sale but a double page spread reporting on the
forum was featured in The Grocer (May 8). If you’d like a copy of this article, please
